What are battery systems?

Battery systems generate electrical energy by the conversion of chemical energy.  This happens by redox reactions taking place at the active materials, namely the negative and positive electrode in one or more electrically interconnected electrochemical cells. Battery systems can be classified into primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) batteries, depending on whether they are capable of being recharged by applying an electric current.
